Team Blake’s Guide to Celebrating the Fourth of July in Kansas City

Festival, parades, fireworks, oh my! Kansas City is the perfect place to celebrate the Fourth of July. With so much to do on the fourth and the weekend leading up to the event, Team Blake has put together your go-to guide to celebrating the Fourth of July in Kansas City. We hope you can pull a few ideas from our list on how to celebrate America’s birthday!

Stars and Stripes Picnic

There may be no better place to celebrate Independence Day than the lawn of the National WWI Museum and Memorial! Known as Kansas City’s official Independence Day celebration, the annual Stars and Stripes Picnic is free to the public, with the grounds opening at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 4th. You’re more than welcome to pack your own picnic or partake in the food trucks and vendors on-site. The headlining act for 2023 is KC native Casi Joy. As long as they’re on a leash, even your furry friends are welcome to join the fun!

Worlds of Fun Fourth of July Celebration

Fourth of July celebrations don’t get much more thrilling than this! Worlds of Fun hosts its own Fourth of July Celebration. To celebrate the holiday, the theme park puts on a firework show extravaganza synchronized to patriotic music. Why not spend the evening at Worlds of Fun and finish the occasion with the fireworks display fit for a family of all ages?

Legacy Blast

If you live or are traveling to visit friends and family in the Lee’s Summit area, there’s a free fireworks display for you to take part in courtesy of Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation (LSPR) and the City of Lee’s Summit. Held Wednesday, July 3rd, this fireworks display will begin at 9:30 p.m. with the gates to Legacy Park opening at 6 p.m. The event will include concessions, DJs, food trucks, and activities for children 12 and under. In the chance of a rain out, the celebration will be moved to Friday, July 5th.

Weston’s Independence Day Celebration and Parade

Step back to a simpler time to enjoy Weston’s Independence Day Celebration and Parade on Thursday, July 4th. The festivities will begin at 4 p.m. with the United States Navy Rock Band playing a set of classic rock and patriotic songs. At 6 p.m. enjoy a Street Dance by Holladay Distillery and McCormick on Main before the sky lights up at night with fireworks presented by Weston Masonic Lodge.

Lenexa Freedom Run

Lace up your sneakers and kick off your Independence Day with a fun run in Lenexa, Kansas! The Lenexa Freedom Run welcomes runners, walkers, and strollers to join the family-friendly event that includes both a 5K and 10K race. Participants will receive a patriotic t-shirt with their registration. Sign up in advance to guarantee your race day T-shirt size.

Prairie Village Village Fest

Prairie Village invites residents and visitors alike to join in their Village Fest celebration on Thursday, July 4th. Beginning at 7:30 a.m. and lasting until 1 p.m. this event offers the perfect family-friendly daytime event. Last year’s event included free kid’s activities including bounce houses, face paintings, carnival rides, a petting zoo, and more.

Overland Park Star Spangled Spectacular

Overland Park will host their own fireworks spectacular on Thursday, July 4th! Visitors can enter Corporate Woods Founders’ Park to enjoy food trucks and live music before the fireworks show at 10 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to get comfy for the evening. For the Star Spangled Spectacular, families can also bring their own water and food to snack on during the event.

Cheering on Your Teams During the Independence Day Weekend

The long weekend is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a ball game with family and friends in town. Luckily, many of Kansas City’s sports teams will be playing in town. The Kansas City Royals will be finishing up a home series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, July 4th. The Kansas City Monarchs will be enjoying a stint at home against the Gary Southshore Railcats from Friday, July 5th through July 7th. Lastly, the Kansas City Current will take on the Orlando Pride at the newly opened CPKC Stadium on Saturday, July 6th.
