Team Blake’s Guide to Celebrating the Fourth of July in Kansas City

Festival, parades, fireworks, oh my! Kansas City is the perfect place to celebrate the Fourth of July. With so much to do on the fourth and the weekend leading up to the event, Team Blake has put together your go-to guide to celebrating the Fourth of July in Kansas City. We hope you can pull a few ideas from our list on how to celebrate America’s birthday!

Stars and Stripes Picnic

There may be no better place to celebrate Independence Day than the lawn of the National WWI Museum and Memorial! Known as Kansas City’s official Independence Day celebration, the annual Stars and Stripes Picnic is free to the public, with the grounds opening at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4th. You’re more than welcome to pack your own picnic or partake in the food trucks and vendors on-site. The headlining act for 2023 is KC native Casi Joy. As long as they’re on a leash, even your furry friends are welcome to join the fun! Fireworks will begin at 9:40 p.m.

Worlds of Fun Fourth of July Celebration

Fourth of July celebrations don’t get much more thrilling than this! Worlds of Fun hosts its own Fourth of July Celebration, as part of its larger 50 Nights of Fire event. To celebrate the holiday, the theme park puts on a firework show extravaganza as soon as it gets dark outside. The 50 Nights of Fire event includes additional elements to the stunning nightly show, including drones, pyrotechnics, and a unique Worlds of Fun narration and soundtrack.

Legacy Blast

If you live or are traveling to visit friends and family in the Lee’s Summit area, there’s a free fireworks display for you to take part in courtesy of Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation (LSPR) and the City of Lee’s Summit. Held Monday, July 3rd, this fireworks display will begin at 9 p.m. with the gates to Legacy Park opening at 6 p.m. The event will include concessions, DJs, food trucks, and activities for children 12 and under. In the chance of a rain out, the celebration will be moved to Wednesday, July 5th.

Weston’s Independence Day Celebration and Parade

Step back to a simpler time to enjoy Weston’s Independence Day Celebration and Parade on Saturday, July 1st. The festivities will begin at 5 p.m. but that gives you plenty of time in the morning to enjoy some of the one-of-a-kind stores, local restaurants, wineries, and more. The celebration will conclude at 10 p.m.

Lenexa Freedom Run

Lace up your sneakers and kick off your Independence Day with a fun run in Lenexa, Kansas! The Lenexa Freedom Run welcomes runners, walkers, and strollers to join the family-friendly event that includes both a 5K and 10K race. Participants will receive a patriotic t-shirt with their registration. Those who sign up before race day can look forward to a $5 discount on registration.

Prairie Village Village Fest

Prairie Village invites residents and visitors alike to join in their Village Fest celebration on Tuesday, July 4th. Beginning at 7:30 a.m., there will be a pancake breakfast held at Harmon Park. Once you’ve properly fueled up, you and the kids can make your way to the free kid’s activities including bounce houses, face paintings, carnival rides, a petting zoo, and more. Residents can look forward to cooling off at the Prairie Village Pool for a free swim day until 6 p.m.

Overland Park Star Spangled Spectacular

Overland Park will host their own fireworks spectacular on Tuesday, July 4th! Visitors can enter Corporate Woods Founders’ Park to enjoy food trucks and live music before the fireworks show at 10 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to get comfy for the evening. For the Star Spangled Spectacular, families can also bring their own water and food to snack on during the event.

Cheering on Your Teams During the Independence Day Weekend

The long weekend is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a ball game with family and friends in town. Luckily, many of Kansas City’s sports teams will be playing in town. The Kansas City Royals will be finishing up a home series with the LA Dodgers on Saturday, July 1st, and Sunday, July 2nd. The Kansas City Monarchs are also enjoying a stint at home, first against the Winnipeg Goldeyes on July 1st and 2nd, before beginning a series with Sioux Falls from July 3rd through July 5th. Lastly, Sporting Kansas City will take on the Vancouver Whitecaps at Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday, July 1st. Sporting will be celebrating Independence Day with a ticket package including one reserved seating ticket, one hotdog, one beer, and field access post-match to watch the fireworks show.
