In this article, we unveil some of these hidden gems in Kansas City that will surprise and delight both visitors and long-time residents alike. From secret bars to looked-over theaters, get ready to explore the lesser-known treasures of Kansas City.
Swordfish Toms
You can grab a cocktail almost anywhere in Kansas City but why not take a trip back to pre-prohibition days inside Swordfish Tom’s? With a max capacity of 30 people, when we say this place is hard to get into, we mean it. Located just around the corner of the Everly Event Space on W 19th Terrace, Swordfish Tom’s is the true definition of a hidden gem. Enjoy a vintage-inspired setting, cozy dark atmosphere, and divine cocktails Tuesday through Saturday evenings in the heart of the Crossroads Arts Districts.
Knuckleheads Saloon
Trek across the train tracks to the East Bottoms to grab a quick drink at the Rieger and head down the block to experience blues, country, and rock acts on outdoor and indoor stages of Knuckleheads. There are four stages in the Knuckleheads complex: The large Outdoor Stage and courtyard, The Saloon, The Gospel Lounge, and The Garage. Check the show calendar often, as it’s likely to find a show or two almost every night of the week. You’re not going to find the most diverse menu at Knuckleheads, but you can always enjoy the classics like mozzarella sticks, chicken strips, popcorn, and french fries.
Screenland Armour Theatre & Rewind Video and Dive
When was the last time you had a night out at the movies? Well, our next hidden gem is just the place for you to add your next movie night to the schedule! North of the river, you’ll find Screenland Armour Theatre house in the original Armour Theatre Building, designed by famed Kansas City architects, Keene and Simpson. Now with an expanded footprint that extends into the original Power and Light building next door to add two pocket theatres, an expanded kitchen, additional lobby seating, and an outdoor patio, Screenland Armour offers the perfect place for a movie date. You’ll find new releases in addition to showings of cult classics and audience-involved events like the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Stick around after the show to visit Rewind Video and Dive, a 90s nostalgia concept with a video store in the theatre’s basement. You can sip on an adult Capri Sun while you lose friendships over your favorite analog consoles, including N64 and Sega Genesis.
Splitlog Coffee
Not all hidden gems have to be the coolest underground bar imaginable! Sometimes the joys of hidden gems can be as simple as a good cup of coffee on a rooftop. Over in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood, you’ll find Splitlog Coffee. Not only does this local coffee shop offer a quick and easy drive-thru but you’ll also find a chic rooftop to enjoy your cup of joe on. We won’t make you try something out of your coffee comfort zone, but we strongly suggest indulging in a yummy cinnamon knot.
Nine Zero One Rooftop
Kansas City isn’t known for its rooftop,s but this one is a can’t-miss destination during the spring and summer. Nine Zero One Rooftop at the top of The Fontaine in the Country Club Plaza is a social destination that almost makes you think you’re among the rooftops of New York City. Take the elevator to the 7th floor to partake in a full seasonal menu, craft cocktails, and a curated wine list. Take a splash in the pool and reserve a cabana in the summer, or pencil yourself in for a seasonal igloo in the winter.
